For visitors, Hong Kong's system of weather warnings can be perplexing. A sudden Typhoon Signal or Rainstorm Warning can disrupt plans. Here’s a simple breakdown of what to do.
Typhoon Signals (T-Signals)
- T1 (Standby): A typhoon is in the region. Proceed with your day, but be aware.
- T3 (Strong Wind): Winds are getting stronger. Ferry services may be suspended. It's wise to finish outdoor activities.
- T8 (Gale or Storm): This is the big one for most people. Businesses, schools, and most public transport will shut down. You should return to your hotel immediately. Wingman services are suspended during T8 or higher for safety.
- T9 & T10 (Increasing Gale/Hurricane): Stay indoors, away from windows. The city is in lockdown.
Rainstorm Warnings
These are independent of typhoons and relate to the intensity of rainfall.
- Amber: Heavy rain is expected. Be aware of potential flooding in low-lying areas.
- Red: Heavy rain is falling. Expect serious traffic congestion and potential landslides.
- Black: Very heavy rain is falling. This is the highest warning. Stay indoors. Widespread flooding and travel disruption are likely.
What To Do As a Tourist?
- Stay Informed: Pay attention to announcements in your hotel, in MTR stations, and on the Hong Kong Observatory website.
- Prioritize Safety: When a T8 or Black Rainstorm signal is issued, your safety is the priority. Do not attempt to travel.
- Trust Your Airport Transfer: If you have a Wingman booking, rest assured we are monitoring the situation. We will contact you regarding any necessary changes to your pickup time once it is safe to travel and will never charge extra. If your flight is cancelled, you will be automatically refunded.
